Did LA Rams outside linebacker Jared Verse make a mistake by taunting Philadelphia Eagles fans as the Rams prepared to travel to Lincoln Financial Field? Or was that all part of some master plan to unnerve fans and players alike, allowing Verse to set the narrative for the game?
From the moment he stepped foot onto the football field, Eagles fans let Jared Verse know that his comments were known and not appreciated. Even the scoreboard flexed in Verse's direction by posting his comments about Eagles fans as the game got underway. But the Rams rookie edge rusher was not done. He was only getting started.
With the Philadelphia Eagles driving the football, Jalen Hurts stepped into the pocket with a third down and eight yards to go on the Rams 30-yard line. As Hurts dropped back to pass the football, Jared Verse set upon him like a heat seeking missile. The Rams likely 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate closed on Hurts and brought him to the ground.
That sack not only pushed the Eagles to a fourth down, but the sack pushed the Eagles out of field goal range. It is exactly the type of play that the Rams love about Verse. Much like his predecessor All-Pro DL Aaron Donald, Verse has a knack for knowing when to make big plays.
Verse was not done.
As time ran out in the first half of the game, with the Philadelphia Eagles facing a third down and 23 yards to go, Jalen Hurts dropped back to take a shot at a deep pass into the end zone. He never go the chance to throw the football, as Verse tackled him for his second sack of the game.
Verse is the type of player who is fueled by fans' energy. And so far, Verse has shown up big in a big game. Despite the Eagles offensive line scoffing at the Rams nine sacks last week against the Minnesota Vikings, the Rams pass rush has shown to be just as capable against the Eagles blockers. The Rams have four quarterback sacks in the first half of this one, and if the Rams manage to take the lead, that could escalate rapidly.
The Rams trail by three points, and they have excelled at making halftime adjustments. Can the Rams make the right adjustments this week? Will deteriorating weather conditions hinder the Rams attempt to come back? Stay tuned. This is a close one.
As always, thanks for reading.
