The Los Angeles Rams have had plenty of reasons to be confident in the depth of their offensive line for 2025. But as soon as the season started, another reality hit the squad.
The O-line has been fragile, less than effective, and struggling. And one of the bigger question marks that has sprung up out of nowhere is the significant regression of former starting center Beaux Limmer.
The cause is anybody's guess. But the effect is undeniable. Limmer was a healthy scratch in Week 5 against the San Francisco 49ers. That's never a good sign, but it wasn't exactly a huge surprise. After all, he showed struggles in Week 2 at pass blocking, and it snowballed into something much larger from there.
Perhaps it was the dysfunction of starting in 2024 and then serving in a backup role this season. It may have been the challenge of cross-training from center to slide into three interior offensive linemen roles this season.
However he arrived at this point, and Limmer is fading quickly in terms of LA's long-term plans.
Beaux Limmer already looks finished just 1 month into 2025
Limmer has played 52 offensive snaps this season, but 44 of them fell in Week 1. He has been backing up right guard Kevin Dotson after Week 1, but showing up as a healthy scratch translates into head coach Sean McVay no longer trusting him with a backup role at either guard or center.
Perhaps even more troubling is the realization that Limmer is just one of several challenges along the offensive line this season.
That's hugely disappointing.
Thankfully, undrafted backup Justin Dedich seems to be growing into a starting role at left guard. And instead of veteran right tackle Rob Havenstein, swing-tackle Warren McClendon Jr. appeared to hold his own in Week 5.
But even they may not be fixes. Who backs up the backups? Los Angeles is currently starting left tackle Alaric Jackson, left guard Justin Dedich, center Coleman Shelton, right guard Kevin Dotson, and right tackle Warren McClendon Jr.. Meanwhile, backing them up are DJ Humphries, Steve Avila, Limmer, David Quessenberry, and injured veteran Rob Havenstein.
But the interior O-line is suddenly thumbs down on both Avila and Limmer.
The Rams are carrying offensive linemen A.J. Arcuri, Dylan McMahon, and Wyatt Bowles on the practice squad, and it may soon reach a point when they elevate the reserves for additional reinforcements.
How bad has it gotten? LA entered a Week 5 game against a division rival, with just one true interior offensive lineman to back up three positions.
That seems like the situation is dire indeed. And there is no immediate relief in sight.
As always, thanks for reading.
