The Los Angeles Rams have yet to show up as the Super Bowl contenders many thought them to be. The Seattle Seahawks, the defending champions, have not exactly fared much better. That could soon change. And if they manage to pry running back Jonathan Taylor from the Colts, who are reportedly in trade talks with several teams, their season could get a rare boost.

That's the last thing the Rams need. Ironically, they were linked to Taylor just three years ago.

At 4-4, Los Angeles is unlikely to win the NFC West. The San Francisco 49ers (6-1) have the pole position in that race. That pits the Rams against other NFC teams for a wild card berth. Right now, they trail four rivals for the top wild card and sit two spots out of the playoffs entirely. Three of the teams ahead of them are from the very competitive NFC North.

The fourth is Seattle, who remains ahead of LA via tiebreakers despite Monday's loss to the Bears.

Jonathan Taylor could be Seahawks' missing piece

It's no accident that former Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III is among the NFL's top runners this season. He signed with the Chiefs as a free agent and is averaging 5.5 yards per carry. Compare that to the Seahawks' top running back, Emmanuel Wilson, who is averaging 3.6 yards.

That's a significant drop in production.

And the Seahawks are built to rely heavily upon a potent run game that controls the clock and moves the chains, allowing quarterback Sam Darnold to pick his spots. The defense gets plenty of time to rest up for the next series.

If Seattle manages to acquire Taylor, they could restore that potency to what should be the bread and butter of the offense. Many analysts would argue that getting Taylor in Seattle is worth paying a premium price. He is the type of player who could give the Seahawks enough offense to go on an unstoppable winning streak.

Rams fans must wait patiently for the return of edge rusher Myles Garrett, who will return to practice this week. Hopefully, the team will welcome back Kobie Turner, Terrance Ferguson, and Davante Adams as well. But a Seahawks team powered by Taylor would become a formidable barrier to a Rams playoff appearance.

General manager Les Snead may stand pat at the trade deadline (or maybe not), but fans should still stay vigilant. LA's fate may lie in what other teams do. Stay tuned.

As always, thanks for reading.
