Sean McVay confirms what fans knew all along about Rams' quarterback room

As the Los Angeles Rams inch closer to Sunday's cutdown deadline, new roster predictions, projections, and debates are flooding in. With so many questions, it's no wonder Horns fans cling to any word uttered by head coach Sean McVay.

His latest 'big reveal' was anti-climactic: yes, Los Angeles will carry three quarterbacks on the initial 53-man roster in Matthew Stafford, Stetson Bennett, and rookie Ty Simpson. Welp, that's something fans already guessed months ago.

"We've got three quarterbacks on our roster," McVay said after Thursday's preseason win over the Chargers. "Obviously, we've got the reigning MVP of the league. And then we got two guys that we feel really good about. And if you say, 'Hey, what does that really mean?' That's what it means. We feel really good about those two guys. I'm not pigeon-holeing myself into any sort of decision other than I feel really good about Stetson Bennett. I feel really good about Ty Simpson."

The wheels were set in motion at the moment the Rams drafted Simpson. When Jimmy Garoppolo did not re-sign in free agency, the depth chart was already forming: Stafford as the starter, Bennett as the backup, and Simpson as an emergency reserve.

And that is likely how the depth chart now stands. Of course, while no official announcement has been made, any changes to the pecking order are of little relevance unless Stafford is unable to suit up.

Rams' draft gamble has already paid off in huge dividends

When LA spent the 13th pick on Simpson, fans were hesitant to roll out the red carpet. Curiously, many reasons for criticizing the selection disperse when discussed.

The Rams exit the preseason with solid film from both backup quarterbacks (Simpson especially has attracted his fair share of hype). As a result, the potential redundancy of rostering both Bennett and Simpson prompted NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky to speculate that Bennett could be traded for the right offer.

And Orlovsky is intimately informed as to what makes LA tick.

McVay confirmed that LA will carry three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. That may not conflict with the current depth chart as it now stands. While he may be in the lead, Bennett has not won the QB2 competition definitively. If he is traded, does LA lose much by placing its trust in Simpson?

If necessary, could the Rams lure back veteran Jimmy Garoppolo? If not, did Matthew Caldwell show enough to warrant consideration for the third quarterback spot? While these are all vital questions to answer, it's a shining vindication for Snead and company for drafting Simpson.

When the 2025 season ended, the quarterback room stood empty in 2027. Now, Stafford has his extension and Simpson is in town, giving the Rams leeway to entertain trading a young QB like Bennett. Stay tuned.
