Shade thrown at the LA Rams over drafting Ty Simpson is getting out of hand

The LA Rams suffer in a recent GM ranking because they cared to draft a future franchise quarterback.

Imagine if you had a scenario in which Tom Brady was deemed ineligible due to one interception thrown. Or a head coach like Don Shula was eliminated from NFL honors and accolades because his team lost a gam in the postseason. Now, imagine how crazy it is for NFL GM rankings to drop Los Angeles Rams general manager Les Snead from the top spot because he drafted rookie quarterback Ty Simpson.

Well, that's what NBC Sports author Patrick Daugherty did in a recent NFL general managers ranking. Swayed by the zeitgeist, Daugherty tossed a combination of Rams general manager Les Snead and head coach Sean McVay to third place in his rankings. and uses the selection of rookie quarterback Ty Simpson, who nobody know how he will perform, as the reason:

The irony here is that if another team selected the same player, but at the end of Round 1 or early in Round 2, the same action of drafting Simpson would be touted as the reason why that NFL general manager was ranked so highly.

Why aren't NFL analysts letting LA Rams 2026 draft play out?

This is a new era of NFL (and news) reporting. IT's no longer what happened, but it's that addition of doom and gloom speculation. And once that becomes an accepted national narrative, few dare to alter its course. Notice how, in his article, Daugherty leaves the reader with no other conclusion than that Ty Simpson is a surefire bust:

"Staring the Lombardi in the face, McVay and company selected Ty Simpson, someone who won’t play until 2027at the earliest, absent injury. It’s bad enough the Rams passed on immediate help. It’s even worse when you remember McVay changes his mind quickly on offense.

Will Simpson even still be his ideal quarterback two years from now?

The Rams are too smart for the rest of the league. Occasionally, they are too smart for even their own good."
- Patrick Daugherty.

He concludes that in two years, Ty Simpson will not even fit the offense, let alone be a solid starting NFL quarterback.

The same brain trust that is riding the wave of success born from selecting overlooked gems from as far back as 2022 is somehow shamed for choosing another potential NFL overlooked star? That is a pretty bold, if not myopic, strategy.

The same group discovered running back Kyren Williams and wide receiver Puka Nacua. This is the same group that unearthed starting left tackle Alaric Jackson after the 2021 season. He was joined in the midst of 2026 by sixth-round selection, right tackle Warren McClendon Jr. Neither starting NFL tackle impressed many NFL analysts when added to the team.

The same story can be said of LA's defense, anchored by outside linebacker Byron Young and nose tackle Kobie Turner. Both LA stars were mildly scouted in 2023. Young was deemed too old to have NFL relevance. Turner was perceived to be too small to make an impact.

They are impressing everyone now.

Los Angeles doesn/t draft for likes or approval. The team drafts unpopular players who love football to improve and upgrade the roster. Until they fail to do so consistently, I'd ignore comments that try to spin history in any other direction.

As always, thanks for reading.
