The Los Angeles Rams have a pretty extensive shopping list for the offseason. That may come as a bit of a surprise for a team that advanced all the way to the NFC Championship Game and lost due to a series of miscues from special teams. But as close as the team came to a victory in Super Bowl LX, 2026 embarks on a brand new season.

New seasons in the NFL translate into a new Rams roster, a new schedule, and a new host of problems. One such problem is the succession plan at the quarterback position. Even as veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford earned MVP honors, the team must define a succession plan for the ever-vital quarterback role.

One possible option to solidify the position comes on the heels of NFL rumors reported by NFL insider Ian Rapoport. In the report, he speculates that the Arizona Cardinals may release quarterback Kyler Murray. Should that happen, Los Angeles could be interested in his services, particularly after hiring his former head coach, Kiff Kingsbury, to the coaching staff.

Kyler Murray to re-unite with his former head coach?

While quarterback Kyler Murray may not move the needle for all fans, he certainly could be an ideal segue from Stafford into the next franchise quarterback. After all, the offense has shown an increasing willingness to borrow concepts from other offenses and improve upon them.

Adding a mobile quarterback seems like a logical next step.

Why would the team make a point of hiring a former opposing head coach unless the goal was to implement some of Kingsbury's offensive tactics? Kingsbury is a mobile quarterback's best friend, and his playbook is immersed in the need for a quarterback who can defeat defenses with his legs as well as his arm.

Murray's best seasons were under Kliff Kingsbury's watch. In 2022, he rushed for 819 yards and 11 touchdowns. For comparison's sake, that is significantly better than running back Blake Corum, who rushed for 746 yards and six touchdowns.

Of course, Murray may be scooped up by a quarterback-needy team that promises him the starting role. But if Murray was savvy about his NFL career, he would give significant consideration to signing with the LA Rams on a team-friendly one-year contract. He will have plenty of time to earn big bucks. But he has an opportunity to restore the luster to his promising NFL career.

He should take it.
