Now the question is, for how much?

Los Angeles Rams fans did not have a huge rookie draft class to track, but the complications with Round 2 rookies holding out to squeeze as much guaranteed money as possible out of NFL teams. But thanks to the San Francisco 49ers' ability to sign DT Alfred Collins, Rams fans had every reason to hope for the impasse to be over, and to finally learn that TE Terrance Ferguson had signed his rookie contract.

This was not consolation prize. The Rams knew what they were doing, and the risks that the team was taking, by trading out of Round 1. But both GM Les Snead and HC Sean McVay knew what was on the other side of that trade. Or, rather who. This team was as confident that Ferguson would be there at 46. And when the draft advanced to the 46th overall pick, and the Rams were finally called to step up to the podium, they selected him.

And he seemed to be their Day 2 top selection all along:

The Los Angeles Rams may have opted not to select a rookie on Day 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft, but that does not diminish the importance of their first selection, Oregon tight end Terrance Ferguson. The Rams offense is under construction this season, compelled to make significant changes after spending more than other NFL offenses, only to fall in the bottom half of points scored.

That is why rookie tight end Terrance Ferguson is so vital for the team's success this season. The Rams struggled to get any production out of the tight end position last season, despite giving opportunities to Colby Parkinson, Davis Allen, and Hunter Long. It was not until the Rams welcomed back veteran tight end Tyler Higbee from injured reserve that the team finally witnessed production out of the position. So why is Ferguson crucial?

Higbee is productive, but coming off a serious injury that nearly benched him for the entire season. Even if medically cleared, the team needs another option who can step up and be productive this season. And that not only takes pressure off Higbee to produce, but adds more offensive potential to the overall offense. Ferguson offers a new set of skills that defensive backs must study and prepare to defend.

Because rookie scales are entirely dependent on when a rookie is selected in the draft, the total contract value for Ferguson is already known, four years worth $9,713,466. The only variable that has prevented Ferguson from signing is how much of that contract will be guaranteed.

Ferguson's contract will cover four years and be worth $9.713 million. That will include $8.047 million of fully guaranteed, as reported by ESPN NFL Insider, Jeremy Fowler:

Ferguson's signing is great news for a Rams roster that hopes to get Ferguson in training camp as quickly as possible. Ferguson is expected to learn the routes and offensive plays quickly. But he may need time to develop the blocking skills required of Rams tight ends. That will fall to TE Coach Scott Huff, who has extensive experience as an OL positional coach as well as tight end coaching on his resume.

The Rams were focused on Ferguson on Day 2, and video confirms that Rams HC Sean McVay was a bit anxious waiting for him to fall to the Rams at the 46th overall pick. But now that he is on the Rams roster, the team has plans for how to use him quickly in his rookie season:

Will Ferguson crack 600 receiving yards in his rookie season? That's highly unlikely, as Rams starting TE Tyler Higbee has only exceeded 600 receiving yards twice in his nine seasons. A more realistic target for Ferguson this season is 400 receiving yards.

Even with modest projections for his rookie season, Ferguson can make a significant contribution this season. As long as he catches passes thrown his way and has success in the Red Zone, he could aid the offense in rebounding this season. And with this signing, you are in safe territory to project Ferguson as TE2 on the Rams depth chart this year.

As always, thanks for reading.
