The injury to Los Angeles Rams starting quarterback Matthew Stafford was more complicated for the team than you may have originally guessed. While the team certainly understood that any time missed by Stafford limits his ability to create chemistry with WR Davante Adams, rookie WR Konata Mumpfield, and rookie TE Terrancance Ferguson, the Rams may not have assessed the impact of reuniting former Las Vegas Raiders teammates, WR Davante Adams and QB Jimmy Garoppolo.
Let's get right to it. Before the Rams signed quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, he was benched and then released after a frustrating season with the Raiders. And one of the main critics of Garoppolo's performance was Adams. And it was that criticism that led to the Raiders benching Jimmy G. Of course, that led to the Rams signing Garoppolo as the team's backup quarterback in 2024.
So after the team signed wide receiver Davante Adams, it only made sense to bring back Garoppolo as the team's veteran backup quarterback. But it was that extension to Jimmy G. that reunited two adversaries who didn't click in the Raiders offense. Could the pair find common ground in the Rams offense?
Davante Adams gives fans reason to breathe a collective sigh of relief
Until starting quarterback Matthew Stafford suffered his back injury, fans had every reason to hope that the past feud between Adams and Garoppolo would not be a factor in 2025. But with Stafford out, Garoppolo is filling in as the starting quarterback. And that makes him completely responsible for passing footballs to Davante Adams.
So how is that going? That question gets posed to Davante Adams at the 8:15 minute mark in the embedded video below. So how does Davante Adams respond?
Well, exactly as all Rams fans hoped he might reply.
"It's amazing. I love Jimmy (Garoppolo). It was never a personal thing. I was hoping that we didn't have these conversations. I'm surprised that this is the first time that it's been brought up.WR Davante Adams
It's been amazing. We got to catch up and get on the right page. Obviously, that was just a dark moment in all of our lives. I think all of us were pretty miserable over there. We kind of caught up and laughed about it. And we've been making plays since we've been out here, so it's been fun."
It's clear from Davante Adams' tone that he is entirely comfortable with the Rams and his quarterback. Better still, he shared that he and Garoppolo took it upon themselves to mend fences and were not forced into some team-mandated counseling or arbitration.
Perhaps there is another silver lining at work with Stafford's absence. It is clear that were it not for the Rams, the Garoppolo-Adams saga might have an entirely different narrative. But as it now stands, the two simply had a rough chapter and are working together on the same page once more. As a result, Rams' fans can breathe a collective sigh of relief.
As always, thanks for reading.
