Ty Simpson finally granted Rams fans what they've been waiting to see

There has naturally been a good deal of attention on Los Angeles Rams rookie quarterback Ty Simpson throughout the early portion of training camp. Rams fans want to see what the controversial No. 13 overall pick looks like after an underwhelming showing in OTAs. 

Recent results have been positive. Friday's practice was Simpson's best session yet. 

"Today was the most comfortable rookie QB Ty Simpson has looked so far," said Rams beat writer Stu Jackson in a social media post. "Mechanically, his release looked quicker. His best throw of the day was on a deep completion to TE Terrance Ferguson during 11-on-11."

That's encouraging news for those anxiously awaiting signs of progress from the young first-round QB.

Simpson's steady progress should put Rams fans at ease

While the scrutiny began before Simpson could even get his feet wet in OTAs, it's what the Rams asked for by reaching for a quarterback who had one year of college experience and was ranked on most big boards as a late first-round pick at best. 

That's not an indictment of Simpson or of the pick. It's just the reality of the situation, and why both Simpson and the Rams were thrust immediately under the microscope.

It's also fair for fans to want some sort of vindication of Simpson's promise; the team didn't draft him to contribute now, but in a way that makes proving his potential even more critical. 

That Simpson is already making strides in practice is an outstanding sign. Not only has he just dipped his toes into life as a pro, he doesn't have much football experience, period, after a single season starting at Alabama.

Training camp only started on July 25, and he hasn't even had all that many reps to work with. Kid appears to be a fast learner.

That said, the Rams have called on Stetson Bennett, not Simpson, to lead second-team drills and step in with the first-stringers on Matthew Stafford's rest days. Thus far, at least, all signs point to Bennett as the frontrunner in the QB2 race. 

And that's okay. Even if, as it seems now, Simpson will be the designated QB3 to begin the year, getting some positive feedback on his development should let LA faithful rest a little easier.

It's only a bonus that his top highlight came with Ferguson, a young Horns pass-catcher the offense is counting on for a sophomore leap. That Simpson-Ferguson connection is something we may see a lot of in years to come. 

All the Rams should want to see from Simpson this summer is enough promise to suggest he is indeed the future franchise quarterback he was drafted to be. Every baby step in the right direction is worth celebrating.
