Ty Simpson's circumstances with Rams were finally put in proper perspective

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Ty Simpson is one of the team's more controversial draft prospects in recent history. But amidst the hullabaloo and detractors, an occasional positive response from an surfaces.

Such is the case with Justin Melo's recent ranking of 2026 rookie quarterbacks for Sports Illustrated. Simpson comes in second after Raiders QB Fernando Mendoza, the Heisman winner at Indiana last season and the No. 1 pick in the draft.

While some fans were frustrated with the selection, many of those same fans also understand the value of banking a future franchise quarterback. Los Angeles has insulated itself from the ebb and flow of future drafts and slim free-agent pickings going forward.

Says Melo of Simpson, "As an inexperienced one-year starter, the situation is ideal for his development, as he's expected to spend multiple seasons learning behind Matthew Stafford."

Multiple seasons? Well, that is an optimal scenario. But for now, it's enough to know that Simpson will get preferential treatment from the coaching staff, which is quite qualified to develop quarterbacks.

Brace yourself NFL, Ty Simpson has time on his side

A first-round quarterback faces a race against time, whether he knows it or not. Patience is thin, and the clock starts ticking the moment of his draft selection. Despite acknowledging that Simpson will sit on the bench this season, pundits will continue to blast the pick as the season unfolds.

If the lone detraction that everyone agrees about Simpson is his lack of experience, then his opportunity to patiently learn from coaches and teammates should be applauded. Melo's ranking reflects that.

Some narratives pit Simpson versus Stafford. Others pit him against backup Stetson Bennett. Neither scenario is likely happening in 2026. LA understood that Simpson is on track to peak in one or two years. Ignore any suggestion otherwise.

The ideal rookie in an ideal situation is not something to rush. Gourmet chefs know that a banquet takes time. Thankfully, fans get a casual reminder of that just as training camp arrives.
