Rookies who compete for the Los Angeles Rams have historically had a better shot at contributing early if they play defense. It’s been that way for some time, ever since the team pivoted toward youth following a disheartening 5-12 finish in 2022. And for the most part, that youth movement has been a rousing success.
But 2025 may find the team pivoting from an emphasis on veterans to young talent on offense as well. And the 2025 NFL Draft seemed to support that shift, as the team selected TE Terrance Ferguson, RB Jarquez Hunter, and WR Konata Mumpfield in a class that already is down to five remaining rookies on the roster.
There is no question this team is loaded with seasoned veterans who are prepared and capable of carrying the offense in Week 1. But with so many options on the roster, wouldn’t it be fun if the playbook opens the season by throwing the entire NFL a huge curveball? And that curveball may be in the form of rookie tight end Terrance Ferguson.
Rams rookie TE Terrance Ferguson could announce his arrival in Week 1
This offense is not dependent upon any rookie offensive playmaker. It may be that very fact that makes them all so dangerous in their NFL debut. Any defense tasked with stopping Davante Adams, Puka Nacua, Tyler Higbee, and Kyren Williams will have little time or strategy to waste on plotting to stop rookies who are unlikely to show.
The thing is, Ferguson is not just an ornament. He is a first step in the offense’s effort to get younger while simultaneously becoming more effective and proficient. With veteran QB Matthew Stafford under center, he will undoubtedly test the Houston Texans’ secondary by throwing to veterans to get a ‘feel’ for the game. Hopefully, at some point, Ferguson enters the game and attracts some targets.
It’s not easy for a rookie to show up as a significant contributor in Week 1. The last time that happened was Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season. In that game, rookie WR Puka Nacua hauled in 10 of 15 passes for 119 yards. His performance was more than a great NFL debut. It was a statement game that announced his quest to flip the NFL on its head.
The team is not battered and bruised entering Week 1 against Houston, as it was when facing Seattle in the opener of 2023. But even as the roster appears to be fully healthy, the scenario still lines up favorably for a tight end twist.
Nacua’s debut in 2023 set up a string of superb performances until Cooper Kupp returned to the football field. Should Ferguson be awarded opportunities in Week 1, how well can defenses prepare to stop everyone in the weeks that follow? In this offense, just eight targets to the rookie can place tremendous pressure on secondaries to prepare for that extra offensive wrinkle.
Fans have heard “we’re gonna...” for some time when it comes to taking bold steps to get this offense on track to score more points. A combination of Adams and Nacua is a great step in that direction. Still, the effort to put more points on the scoreboard needs a multi-pronged attack, and Ferguson is simply one more prong to that goal.
Best of all, he has the confidence and full attention of HC Sean McVay:
“He’s got a good feel, good tempo to his game. I thought he did well.”

Locked and loaded? Perhaps. This offense is unlikely to get crazy over a rookie when there are so many worthy offensive weapons all vying for one football. But chess is a game that requires multi-layered strategy. To be an optimally effective offense, this team may deem it vitally important to get its rookie tight end heavily involved in Week 1. That seems like a great opening strategy.
As always, thanks for reading.
