St. Louis Rams Playoff Hopes Still Alive Against Chargers

The St. Louis Rams sit at 4-6 ten weeks into the 2014 NFL season. While missing the playoffs for the tenth consecutive season seems to be the most likely, making the playoffs isn’t totally out of the question.

To keep that hope alive, they’ll have to get a win in San Diego against the Chargers and do something that they’ve only done five times in the Jeff Fisher era, win back to back games.

The St. Louis Rams have lacked consistency in the Jeff Fisher era, but over the past three weeks, the Rams are starting to find that consistency. The Rams defense will be going for their fourth straight game without allowing more than 20 points.

The one place the Rams should be concerned is with the offense. After a big win against the Seahawks, the offense only put up seven points the next week against the Chiefs, then after a close defensive win against the 49ers, the offense managed only 14 against the Cardinals.

If the Rams can get production out of their offense and stay consistent on defense, there is no question they should be able to beat the Chargers on the road who were the losers of three straight before escaping the Raiders last week.

With a win against the Chargers the Rams would move to 5-6 with not a game on the schedule that isn’t winnable, the most difficult contests being against the Cardinals and Seahawks. At 4-7 however, it would be a completely different story.

Im not saying the Rams are going to win out, but even with if they split the games against the Cardinals and Seahawks that would put the Rams at 9-7 and some hope of sneaking into the playoff picture. At the very least it would give the Rams their first winning record since 2003.

As of right now Football Outsiders gives the Rams a 0.9% chance of getting into the number six seed, but with other teams like the Seahawks, 49ers, Eagles, Cowboys, and Cardinals just now getting into the beef of their schedule and the Rams getting a relief per se to end the season, anything is possible.

ESPN just came out with their 2014 NFL Playoff Machine and in the land where everything can happen, at 9-7, the Rams can still sneak in the NFC playoff picture, but it all starts this week with very winnable game on the road against the San Diego Chargers.
