St. Louis Rams Release Jake Long, Scott Wells

The St. Louis Rams have spend most of the free agency tampering period on stand still with not much news coming out of their camp. Aside from a few rumors about a Nick Foles trade, it’s been pretty quiet.

However, things heated up Monday night when Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the St. Louis Rams have cut both Scott Wells and Jake Long.

It was the news that St. Louis Rams fans everywhere were waiting to hear. By releasing the two offensive lineman the Rams will save approximately $12 million in salary-cap space to spend elsewhere.

In a statement released by the team Jeff Fisher had this to say about Long and Wells:

"“Jake and Scott brought experience and professionalism to our program and we appreciate their commitment and hard work,” Head Coach Jeff Fisher said. “Both of them overcame injury difficulties and provided leadership for our younger players. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for both of them.”"

According to Ian Rapoport, the Rams will keep in discuss options with Long as he rehabs, but the bottom line is, the Rams opened up a lot of cap space by releasing a player that needed to be cut. There was no way Long was going to be able to come back on that number.

Long signed a four year deal worth up to $36 million in 2013. However, the former Pro Bowl left tackle never played up to the level that many expected and tore his ACL in both seasons with the team.

Wells, one of the first free agents to sign with the Rams in the Jeff Fisher era. Wells signed a  four year worth $24 million with $13 million guaranteed in 2012. Wells has been unable to stay healthy and has played quite poorly when he has been on the field.

Les Snead and Jeff Fisher will now have some cap space that they can use to sign a player like Stefan Wisniewski and Justin Blalock, as well as use to sign free agents of their own like Britt and Kendricks if they chose.

Many of the big name players seem to have already decided where they are going to play with tampering not over yet, therefore the Rams are going to have to do what they can with the mid-tier guys.
