St. Louis Rams Awarded One Compensatory Pick

On Monday night, the league gave out its 32 compensatory choices for the 2015 NFL draft. Those choices are spread out over the draft’s final four rounds with the best pick a team can receive coming at the end of the third round.

Compensatory picks are handed out based on complicated formula that goes off of how much a team loses one year and how much they gained the next year.

For the Rams last year they lost Kellen Clemens, Shelley Smith, and Darian Stewart while gaining Shaun Hill, Alex Carrington, and Kenny Britt.

Before Monday night the Rams only had five picks in this year’s draft with a selection in the first, second, third, fourth and seventh round. After Monday night, that number grew by one. After the compensatory picks were handed out, the St. Louis Rams gained a sixth round pick witch will be the 40th pick in that round and the 215th selection.

This works out perfectly for the Rams as they traded away both a fourth and sixth round pick before the NFL trade deadline after trading for safety Mark Barron. The Rams were fortunate enough to get the fourth round pick back in the Nick Foles trade and now they have gotten the sixth round pick back as well.

While both selections aren’t as high as they would have been if they were the Rams’ selections, a pick is a pick. Last season, the St. Louis Rams selected cornerback E.J. Gaines in the sixth round with the 188th overall selection and with a compensatory pick last year, they selected Garrett Gilbert with the 214th overall selection.

With the added pick, the Rams will now have a pick in round one through four as well as a pick in the sixth and seventh. They are missing a fifth round pick after trading it to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Foles-Bradford trade.

While the Rams didnt receive a high compensatory pick, the fact that they receive anything is a good thing considering the Rams really didnt lose all that much last season. The Rams entered the offseason with only five picks in the upcoming draft, certainly they will welcome the gifted sixth.
