The Los Angeles Rams used one of their sixth-round picks on Virginia Tech Sam Rogers, which came as a shock to most fans.

With the Los Angeles Rams entering the 2017 NFL Draft looking to improve their passing game and offensive line, fullback was the last position anyone could have predicted the team to spend one of their picks on. But believe it or not, the Rams did in fact use a sixth-round pick on former Virginia Tech fullback Sam Rogers, and as crazy as it sounds, fans should be thrilled over the potential surrounding this selection.

Most teams in the NFL don’t even bother using the fullback position these days since they prefer to use that roster spot on a different position, but when looking at his size and strength, Rogers seems like the type of player that could have an immediate impact with boosting the offense. Not only did Rogers find a way into the end zone 10 total times over the last two seasons with the Hokies as a rusher and receiver, but just imagine what he could do as an effective blocker in the backfield.

Between helping with the protection of Jared Goff along with building the necessary holes to help Todd Gurley move downfield, the Rams must have done their homework, and see the potential impact Rogers would be able to make right off the bat as a member of this offense. Otherwise, why would Los Angeles waste a sixth-round pick on Rogers when it easily could have been used on helping fill another area in need of improvement?

After finishing at the bottom of the league in 2016 by only averaging 14 points per game, Sean McVay hopes to see a complete turnaround with the Rams’ offense during his first year as head coach. And if all goes well, Rogers could end up playing a key role in that hopeful turnaround with the offense during his rookie season.
