Los Angeles Rams quarterback Sean Mannion may be the most interesting unknown commodity in LA.
The Los Angeles Rams closed the books on May and head full steam into June and the SoCal summer. But don’t be fooled, questions abound at positions up and down the roster and the chess match begins with who may be the starting quarterback in LA.

THAT may be the best news of all.
In the age of participation trophies and “getting yours” before you earn it, Sean McVay looks to be, and absolutely should be, open to the best guy emerging atop the QB depth chart.
Hey, I get it. The Rams are all in on Jared Goff, but not by choice. When you select a guy number one overall at that position, he’ll get every chance to be the starter.
And he will.
I’m just saying it should be different in LA.
McVay should take the view that he, nor the organization is wedded to Goff. Just look at the position his former employer in Washington has taken with Kirk Cousins. Cousins has actually accomplished things. He’s won games and led the Redskins to the playoffs. All while competing in the best division in the NFL.
He’s a proven commodity, even if Washington isn’t sold just yet.
Which brings me to Sean Mannion.
Why shouldn’t it be open at the quarterback position in LA? Outside of the dubious distinction of Goff being selected first overall, he hasn’t shown any reason to be the defacto number one guy.
Mannion is entering his third season with the Rams. He had a solid career at Oregon State, and didn’t play badly in the 2016 preseason .
He also didn’t show much in his relief appearance last year in Seattle. Then again, neither did Goff as the starter.
Bottom line, why shouldn’t THE BEST option be the BEST approach for who starts at quarterback this season in Los Angeles?
2017 should be an open audition. Fingers are crossed for Goff and I get that. But Mannion should get a long look with the first team offense to see what the Rams might have with the guy most likely to hold the clipboard come opening day.
Fair?
Not by a long shot. But that seems to be a theme in such situations.

Maybe McVay will surprise in a year he has such a luxury because trust me, he won’t have this chance again.
And neither with Goff or Mannion.
