While finding their quarterback of the future might be the Rams top overall need this offseason, finding a center to replace the aged and injury-prone Scott Wells might be the top “immediate need.” Like the guard spot, there are some option already on the Rams roster, with Barrett Jones having been drafted (allegedly) to take over the role in 2013. Tim Barnes has also taken some snaps from the center spot, but is set for free agency and did not perform particularly well as a starter in this limited time on the field.
That leaves two options: free agency and the Draft. Players like Florida State’s Cameron Erving and Oregon’s Hroniss Grasu are the most popular names among centers in the upcoming class, and should both be available by the time the St. Louis Rams are picking in the second round.
The free agency options are much more limited, with only a handful of notable players slotted to test the waters. Tops on the list is Rodney Hudson, who has been one of the only consistent bright spots on the Chiefs offensive line over the last couple of seasons. If Kansas City doesn’t find a way to tie him down before the bell rings for free agency, the Rams would be smart to throw some money in his direction.
Top candidate: Rodney Hudson, Kansas City
Second option: Stefen Wisniewski, Oakland
Next: Outside Linebacker
