BREAKING: St. Louis Rams Trade Sam Bradford For Nick Foles
The St. Louis Rams have agreed to terms on a trade that will send quarterback Sam Bradford and a fifth-round pick in 2015 for quarterback Nick Foles as well as a fourth-round draft pick in 2015 and a second-round pick in 2016.
The Rams could also send extra picks if Bradford plays less than 50 percent of the snaps in 2015, the Eagles get a 2016 fourth-round pick and if he does not play this season, the Eagles get a 2016 third-round pick from the Rams. However, if Bradford plays more than 50 percent of the snaps in 2015, the Eagles get no additional picks.
The Rams chose Bradford with the first overall pick in the 2010 draft. He started 49 games over five seasons, including all 16 as a rookie, a year in which he won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and lead the Rams to a winner take all game against the Seattle Seahawks.
Bradford’s career with the Rams was plagued with injuries, sustaining an ankle injury in 2011 and ACL injuries that have sent the quarterback to injured reserved the last two seasons. Bradford has only started seven games for the Rams the last two years combined.
Rams owner Stan Kroenke had this to say about the trade in the team’s press release:
"“Throughout his five years with the Rams, Sam has been a consummate professional,” Rams Owner E. Stanley Kroenke said. “We thank Sam for his dedication to our team and community and wish him and his family the best moving forward.”"
A third-round draft choice of the Eagles in 2012, Foles started 24 games during his three-year career, posting 6,753 yards and 46 touchdowns on 61.6 percent passing. Foles earned Pro Bowl honors following the 2013 season after leading the league with a 119.2 quarterback rating, the third-best mark in NFL history, on the back of 27 touchdowns and two interceptions.
Under Chip Kelly, Foles has accounted for 14 wins to only five losses, and lead the Eagles to the playoffs in 2013.
This is an interesting trade as the Rams seem to have stood by their quarterback over the past two seasons despite his ACL. However, by trading Bradford, the Rams open up a lot of cap space and will have the ability to sign free agents to help rebuild the offensive line.
