According to NFL Network’s Albert Breer, the St. Louis Rams will make a trip to Florida State and Oregon in order to work out the top two quarterbacks in the draft, Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota.
It seems unlikely that either quarterback is still on the board by the time the Rams pick at ten, and it is highly unlikely that the Rams would give up picks in order to trade up and draft either of them. However, with Winston’s off the field issues and the fact that a lot of teams only like Mariota and aren’t in love with him, unless your Philadelphia, the chances of either dropping to ten are slim, but possible.
To take a look, assuming the Buccaneers take Winston or Mariota at one, Tennessee doesn’t seem to be in the quarterback market right now. The Jaguars and Raiders seem to have their guys in Bortles and Carr, Washington will give Griffin III one more shot, the Jets seem to be leaning more toward defense, Chicago has Cutler, Atlanta has Matt Ryan, and the Giants have Eli Manning.
If Mariota or Winston get past Tennessee and the Jets, it is very possible that they would then get to ten, and if they did the Rams would certainly have to consider taking them.
Most likely this is just the Rams covering their bases and doing their on the top quarterbacks here in the case that they do drop. They did trade for Nick Foles earlier this offseason, therefore he looks to be the answer, however, if Foles is just a stopgap, they would need to know if either of these quarterbacks is worth drafting. They did work out Johnny Manziel last year, then passed on him twice.
It is unlikely that the Rams would get the chance to draft Mariota or Winston, but if they did, at least we know they have done their homework.
