St Louis Rams Draft Prospect: DeVante Parker
By Nic Moody
The St Louis Rams don’t necessarily need another wide receiver. They already have young talent that is growing every year. Would another wide out really hurt though? Probably not, assuming the rams still get their offensive line needs fixed. So let’s pretend the rumors are true for a second, and that the rams are indeed interested in another wide receiver. Let’s also pretend that the rams don’t have an intense need of offensive line.
So Devante Parker seems like a realistic option. He is the third wide receiver projected to go in this draft. So at 10, the Rams have a very good chance of picking him up.
Devante Parker stands 6’3, weighing in at a modest 209 lbs. His size is great for a starting wide-out, and his 36.5 inch vertical is impressive also. He ran a 4.45 40 yard dash, which is not far behind Amari Cooper. (4.42) He was fortunate enough to play football in his home town of Louisville, Kentucky.
Parker got progressively better throughout his college career. Posting the following numbers in his first four seasons:
G REC YDS Year
11 18 291 2011
13 40 744 2012
12 85 885 2013
7 43 855 2014
What is truly impressive, is that the 855 yards he posted in 2014, was only in six games, as he missed the first seven games with an injury. For the pace he was on, Parker would have hit over 1700 yards. That is a very impressive stat.
Pros:
Parker has good size, and can run good routes. He fights for the ball and is the best red-zone wide receiver in the draft. He rarely drops the ball, and has some of the best concentration to come out in recent years. He gets open a lot, even on scrambles or broken plays.
Con’s:
He isn’t very strong. This sometimes causes him to get pushed around, either on the line of scrimmage or down the field. This also means that he isn’t an ideal run blocker. Sometimes his routes are not polished.
If the Rams are hell bent on a receiver, then it makes sense taking Parker. His abilities in the red-zone would give an important boost to the team. The Rams also would not have to trade anything to get him, so a possible win-win there.
Of course, back into reality, the Rams desperately need offensive line help.
