Best, Worst Case Scenarios For The St. Louis Rams on Draft Day

The 2015 NFL Draft is only a handful of days away and the St. Louis Rams are set to pick tenth overall. Because the Rams are on the edge of the top ten there is a good chance that the player that they really want will already be gone, while with the chaos of what is the NFL Draft, a player that they never expected to fall to them, very well could. Here are the best and worst case scenarios for the Rams on draft day:

Best Case Scenario 1: Amari Cooper Falls

There is no question that the St. Louis Rams need offensive line. However, Amari Cooper is a rare, elite talent. ESPN’s Bill Polian has compared him to Reggie Wayne, and NFL.com has compared him to Marvin Harrison. It’s not a bad thing to be compared to those two players, that’s for sure.

The Rams have wide receivers in Quick and Britt, but new quarterback Nick Foles had DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin to work with in Philadelphia and succeeded with both, he could do the same with Cooper.

Best Case Scenario 2: Marcus Mariota Falls

This would be the best case scenario for the Rams. If Mariota falls to the Rams at ten, there will be numerous team calling to get the Oregon quarterback whether it be Cleveland, Philadelphia, San Diego, or even Kansas City.

In this scenario the Rams would without question be able to pick up one if not two extra first round picks as well as possibly an extra pick in the second round. The Rams would also have the option in drafting Mariota, but picking up the extra picks would certainly be the better option.

Best Case Scenario 3: Brandon Scherff Survives to Ten

In many mock drafts, the number one target for the St. Louis Rams has been Brandon Scherff, however, in most cases, Scherff is gone by the time the Rams pick. The Iowa offensive lineman is the best lineman in the draft, and that is the Rams’ number one need.

If Scherff survives to ten, the Rams get an inside lineman for the next ten years that is a mauler in the run game and is pretty good in pass protection. Scherff can start at guard with the potential to move to tackle in the future. For the Rams to rebuild their offensive line this draft, Scherff MUST be available at ten.

Worst Case Scenario 1: Brandon Scherff is Off The Board

The Rams’ number one need in the draft is offensive line, and Scherff is the number one offensive lineman on the board. If the Iowa offensive lineman is gone the Rams will either have to hope that a receiver like White or Cooper is available or a team is willing to trade up so the Rams can trade back and hope for a guy like La’el Collins.

This is a very likely scenario as the New York Giants, Washington Redskins, and New York Jets could take him. If Scherff is gone the Rams are going to need a solid backup plan that still allows them to build the offensive line.

Worst Case Scenario 2: Scherff, Cooper, and White are Off The Board

This would be the absolute worst case scenario for the Rams. These are arguably their top three options and if all three are gone the Rams are going to have to hope that a team is willing to help them trade back.

With these three players gone it would force the Rams to either take a player who doesn’t necessarily fit their scheme in Peat, reach on Collins, or take a player at not really a position of need in Trae Waynes.

Worst Case Scenario 3: The Rams can’t Trade Back

Unless Scherff or Cooper are on the board, the Rams are most likely going to try to trade back, however, as mentioned earlier it is possible that they won’t be able to. If Scherff and Cooper are gone, the Rams are going to have to hope that a team like Miami or Kansas City would want to trade up for a top receiver.

As mentioned earlier if the Rams can’t trade back and the players that they are targeting at ten are gone, it would force the them to reach on a player or take someone who isn’t necessarily a good fit, both not being very good options.

The NFL Draft will happen later this week and we can only hope that one of the three best case scenarios for the Rams does happen, but if they dont and it goes the other way, Les Snead and company must be prepared for the worst.
