Ramblin’ Fan Staff Mock Draft: Who Will The St. Louis Rams Take In The First Round
The 2015 NFL Draft is finally here and unlike years in the past, nobody has any idea what the St. Louis Rams will do with the tenth overall pick. Will they go offensive line, will they go wide receiver. and you could even throw quarterback into the conversation.
The staff here at Ramblin’ Fan got together and gave who they thought the St. Louis Rams would take with the 10th overall pick:
Editor Blaine Grisak – OL Brandon Scherff, Iowa
The Rams traded for quarterback Nick Foles from the Eagles and need to be able to protect him. Scherff is a physical guy that will most likely start inside at guard. In a physical division like the NFC West, Scherff is a perfect fit. The Rams are a run-first team and Scherff is a great run blocker. The big problem is whether or not Scherff will last until ten. If he does, there is no way the Rams can pass on him.
Editor Colin Hubbard – WR DeVante Parker, Louisville
This is a guy that has grown on me quite a bit over the past couple of weeks. The Rams need offensive line help and a receiver. I strongly believe that Brandon Scherff and Kevin White will be off the board when the Rams pick at 10. Parker would be the best available player left and would make sense. I don’t have a ton of faith in any of the other lineman that early in the draft. So if the Rams do actually pick at 10, Parker is my guy.
Staff Writer Lawrence Pereira – OL Brandon Scherff, Iowa
Like Greg Robinson last year, this pick fills the biggest need on the roster with the best player available. With several receiver-needy teams picking ahead of the Rams, I believe both Kevin White and Amari Cooper will be off the board by the time St Louis are on the clock. In any event, with the investment in Britt, Quick, Austin and Cook my guess is the front office believes the team has enough weapons in the passing game – or at least enough that they can wait at least one more round before drafting another.
The Rams’ failure to make any significant strides towards solidifying the offensive line in free agency only highlights the need at those positions. St Louis have moved on from Sam Bradford, whose lack of success was due (in part) to the substandard line in front of him. Fisher and Snead do not want to make the same mistake with Nick Foles.
Staff Writer Nicholas Moody – OL Andrus Peat, Stanford
Nic would like the St. Louis Rams to trade back with the Eagles to acquire Peat. If Scherff is off the board, a trade back would be the best case scenario as the Rams dont really have a need for wide receiver or cornerback which is who they would have to take if Scherff was off the board. If Mariota is still on the board, this is a very likely scenario.
Staff Writer Julian Felice – OL T.J. Clemmings or OL La’el Collins
This lack of predictability has made for a varied list of potential draftees for Jeff Fisher’s team. While names such as wide receiver Kevin White, cornerback Trae Waynes, offensive lineman La’el Collins and even quarterback Marcus Mariota have all been thrown about. The Rams have plenty of serviceable receivers but lack the stellar talent that both Cooper and Parker seem to offer. The offensive line is clearly in need of personnel, and indications are that Sherff and Peat would offer good value with the tenth pick.
And it is on the offensive line that, I feel, the Rams should be concentrating. The (justified) losses of Jake Long and Scott Wells, along with the front office’s seeming failure to re-sign Joe Barksdale have all left gaping holes in what was already a shaky line. Second-year Greg Robinson and oft-injured, Raiders reject Roger Saffold are the only starting options on the roster, and, with the team not having addressed the position in free agency, in seems as if the Draft is the only (and risky) resort.
The problem is, however, that it is perfectly possible that neither Sherff not Peat might be available at Number Ten. In this case, the Rams should consider moving along the board. Trading up to snatch one of these is tempting but, in all honesty, the Rams have little to offer and I would be loath to see them give up future picks. On the other hand, the tenth pick could end up a valuable piece of real estate which could see the Rams move down and draft a lower-rated lineman such as Collins or T. J. Clemmings while gaining more picks. This, to my mind, would be a preferred solution over drafting a receiver.
