It seems to be a recent belief that the St. Louis Rams will take a wide receiver with the tenth overall pick. While the Rams have little to show for their efforts in the past, they’ve invested six draft picks in the first four rounds in the last four drafts, this year might be the year that they finally get their guy.
According to Bleacher Report’s Dan Pompei, the St. Louis Rams are looking to trade up for Alabama’s Amari Cooper, and if they can’t or he is unavailable when they pick, they will be looking to trade back. From what Pompei’s hearing, Cooper seems to be their guy.
Tavon Austin is rapidly approaching bust status and the fact that the team recently resigned Kenny Britt, Cooper would certainly upgrade the talent in the Rams receiving group. The Alabama prospect is the most polished receiver in the draft and has drawn comparisons to Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne.
While Cooper’s perceived ceiling may not be as high as other first-round receivers like WVU’s Kevin White or Central Florida’s Breshad Perriman, he seems to be a much safer bet and will likely be able to come in and contribute to an offense right away.
This will most likely come into where Cooper goes. If Cooper goes in the top five to a team like Oakland, the Rams probably won’t be able to get him without giving up an arm and a leg. If he is there after five at six or seven, trading up three or four spots is a much easier task.
This is when the Michael Brockers trade to Chicago makes a lot of sense. The Rams have without a doubt been doing their homework and are a wild card in the draft. They have the option of moving back, staying put, or moving up. At this point nobody knows what the cards hold for Les Snead and Jeff Fisher.
