Gurley fits the Rams very well however, this comes as a tremendous shock. St. Louis had a big need on the offensive line as well as at the receiver position.
The top 10 came and went without a lot of surprising picks which is a little surprising but the Rams got the man they wanted evidently.
Gurley is the best back to come out of the draft in quite some time and will instantly make an impact but with him coming off of a torn ACL several months ago and question marks on the offensive line, this is a very interesting pick.
With this selection, the Rams will now address the offensive line and their receiving core in the later rounds in order to give quarterback Nick Foles someone who can rely on to catch the ball and to keep him upright.
The main reason the Rams opted to go with Gurley is because they feel they can address their other needs in the coming rounds. The draft is loaded at their positions of need and allowed the Rams to make the easy decision here in the first round with a freak athlete in order to snatch up what they need in the second or third round rounds.
Jeff Fisher loves to run the ball. This pick allows the Rams to solidify that position with second year running back Tre Mason as the second string and to take the pressure off of Foles.
Many will question why the opted for Gurley when they already had a solid running back in Mason, but as Rams fans know, running back has always been the top priority ever since the departure of Kurt Warner.
Brandon Scherff was the number one ranked OT and was very well liked by Rams’ fans but sadly, I projected Scherff to be long gone by the time the Rams drafted and I was dead on. Scherff was drafted fifth overall by the Washington Redskins, five picks before the Rams were selecting. Nobody projected Scherff to go quite this high. Many believed he would be selected either seventh or ninth by the Chicago Bears or New York Giants but we were all wrong.
The next player believed to be high on the Rams draft board was Kevin White, WR out of the university of West Virginia. Sadly, White was selected by the Bears with the seventh overall pick in the draft. Many believed White to be the second best receiver in this years draft.
Offensive lineman Ereck Flowers was also an option for the Rams at pick number 10, but yet again, Flowers was selected before the Rams had an opportunity to and was selected ninth overall by the Giants.
So this gave the Rams a couple of options. Draft Andrus Peat or take a receiver in DeVante Parker. The Rams also had the option of trading back in the draft if they felt as if Parker or Peat were too early to select.
However, the Rams decided to shock the world and draft Gurley. Lets hope they made the right decision.
