5 Players Most Likely to Break Out in St Louis
By Nic Moody
The St Louis Rams have no shortage of young talent. With most of them yet to really break out yet, it seems it’s only a matter of time before some of them do. Here are my top five most likely to break out candidates.
1: Stedman Bailey
If you read my latest article, you know how I feel about this kid. He has the softest hands on the team, and if he is started, will easily be able to rack up 50+ catches with close to (or over) 1000 yards receiving. Foles will be asked to unload the ball quickly most of the time, which will require a receiver who runs great routes and has a great catching ability. Stedman Bailey fits that role perfectly.
2: Tre Mason/Todd Gurley
Tre Mason will be the first running back to break out on the Rams roster this year. Mainly because Todd Gurley will likely be out for the first six weeks or more. Mason knows he has a lot to prove, and with the starting job for the first few games, and a new massive offensive line, he will have plenty of tools to prove his worth.
Gurley will be allowed to heal, and when he does return, he will prove why he is the number 10 overall pick. I do not expect him to break 1000 yards, but I do expect to see a few breakout games of 100 yards or more.
3: Nick Foles
Nick Foles might not ever hit the numbers he did in 2013, but that doesn’t mean he still won’t succeed in St Louis. He knows how to get rid of the ball fast, and with targets like Bailey, who gets open often and can catch outside his frame, Tavon Austin, who can make plays in space, and Britt, who can be a great down field target, Foles can easily use these receivers to help him score plenty of touchdowns, while keeping the turnovers down.
4: Lance Kendricks
I really loved that Kendricks took a discount to remain in St Louis. He led the team in receiving touchdowns last year, and was tied for second the year before. He gets better every year, and with a better quarterback under center, he will have even more chances to grow in 2015.
5: The entire Rams defense
No I wasn’t ignoring the defense, on the contrary, I think the entire defense can break out. After being under defensive coordinator Greg Williams for a full season now, the defense is finally clicking, as they showed in the second half of the season last year.
So who can break out? Anyone really. Nick Fairley, Aaron Donald, Alec Ogletree, Akeem Ayers, E.J. Gaines, Trumaine Johnson, T.J Mcdonald, Mark Barron. Any of these players can succeed in the Williams system, and will feed off each others ability nicely.
Plenty of players have the potential to break out, but with a new offensive line, coordinator, and quarterback, it will be no easy task.
