Malcolm Brown is the New Zac Stacy
By Zach White
When you’re coming out of high school as such a highly touted recruit, a lot of people are expecting an easy journey from college to the NFL. That wasn’t quite the case here for Malcolm Brown. Coming out of high school Brown was considered the best running back in his class. He chose to take his talents to the University of Texas, which wasn’t very far from his hometown of Cibolo. Once Brown got to Austin things weren’t as easy for him as a lot of people thought it would be. Now, Brown finds himself as an UDFA on the St. Louis Rams, and why he has a chance to make an immediate impact on this roster.
Malcolm Brown comes in at 5′ 11″, 225lbs. That’s is as close as you can get to ideal size when it comes to a running back. One thing that Zac Stacy and Brown have in common is that they both are very strong finishers on their runs. There wasn’t a time while watching Brown that he got drove back at the end of his runs. Brown is one of those guys who will always fight for extra yardage. Now, whether that can be good or bad is for you to decide. Another similarity Brown and Stacy have is that they are both big time blitz stuffers in the passing game. Brown is not afraid at all to come into the hole and put a shot on the incoming defender. That is something that can get him some snaps, especially on third down.
There are some weaknesses in Brown’s game, but they are identical to the same ones Stacy had coming out of college as well. One of those weaknesses is Brown’s explosiveness. He isn’t the quickest of running backs. Brown ran a 4.62 40 at the NFL Combine, which is a lot slower than you would like to see in a running back. Brown isn’t real dynamic in the open field, which doesn’t allow him to gain more yards than he’s suppose to. This just means that Brown will just have to ground and pound his entire career in order to be as successful as he can be.
Even though it is unfortunate that the Rams and Stacy had to go separate ways with the pick of Todd Gurley in this years draft, the Rams definitely found someone who can come in and contribute right away just like Stacy did. This might not be on an every down basis like Stacy, but watch out for Brown to get snaps on third down and look for him to be a contender for special teams spots as well. With all of this said, it looks like Brown is going to get every shot this summer to try to make the 53 man roster for the Rams.
