One big position of need for the Los Angeles Rams this offseason is without question, quarterback. It is proven in today’s NFL, that without one, you are doomed and really dont stand much of a chance. Whether the Rams address that need in free agency or the draft is yet to be determined.

One name that gets brought up quite frequently in the names that the Rams could sign in free agency is one that has quite a connection to the team in Robert Griffin III. As Rams fans know, the Washington Redskins traded three number one picks and a second round pick to the Rams in order to draft RGIII.

Fast forward to four years later, and aside from a fantastic rookie season in which Griffin earned rookie of the year honors, the former first round pick has turned out to be a bust as he has been benched for Kirk Cousins.

There has been speculation that the Redskins could cut RGIII and in the process save cap space. However, according to the Washington post, the Redskins could wait on cutting the quarterback. In an interview at the Senior Bowl, general manager Scot McCloughan said,

"“The thing that’s good about where we are right now is, we have until March 9. That’s why I want to sit with the coaches – and not just the coordinators, position coaches; everybody – and get a feel for it, because [Griffin] is a good football player, he’s a really good person, and he’s under contract. And that’s where we are right now.”"

While the team is committed to Cousins, his contract expires this offseason leaving Griffin the only quarterback under contract for next season. Until Cousins re-signs, there is no guarantee that he will be back with the team that drafted him in the same draft as RGIII.

McCloughan essentially is ensuring the team has an ace in the hole for the time being rather than simply cutting Griffin and leaving the team without a quarterback under contract. It is still likely that Griffin is cut, but it just may have to wait until it is assured that Cousins signs what is expected to be a large contract.

There is no question that Griffin is a good football player and if he is cut, the Rams should at the very least do their due diligence and take a look. If given the right opportunity, and a fresh start in Los Angeles, Griffin has the capability to again become a quality starter in the NFL
