According to San Diego Tribune’s Kevin Acee, the San Diego Chargers and Los Angeles Rams have agreed to a principal deal that would move the Chargers to LA where they would share the Inglewood stadium with the Rams.

NFL owners voted earlier this month to allow the Rams to move from Los Angeles and gave the Chargers the option to join them. Originally the Chargers had a plan to build a stadium in Carson, but in the end the owners voted in favor of Kroenke’s plan in Inglewood. Dean Spanos and the Chargers have until January 15, 2017 to officially decide whether or not the team will move to Los Angeles.

The Chargers will still have the option to work a deal out with the city of San Diego as the move to LA is hardly a guarantee. If they do get a stadium approved this year, that deadline could be extended to 2018.

While there still is a small chance that the team remains in San Diego, it’s more likely that the team moves to Los Angeles, the only question is when. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the team will remain in San Diego at least for the 2016 season.

In a statement released by the Chargers, Spanos said,

"Today I decided our team will stay in San Diego for the 2016 season and I hope for the long term in a new stadium. I have met with Mayor Faulconer and Supervisor Roberts and I look forward to working closely with them and the business community to resolve our stadium dilemma. We have an option and an agreement with the Los Angeles Rams to go to Inglewood in the next year, but my focus is on San Diego. This has been our home for 55 years, and I want to keep the team here and provide the world-class stadium experience you deserve. Everyone on both sides of the table in San Diego must now determine the best next steps and how to deploy the additional resources provided by the NFL. I am committed to looking at this with a fresh perspective and new sense of possibility."

Earlier this week, the  team acquired land in Orange County, California for what will assumably be their new headquarters and practice facility.

There have yet to be any details released on what type of deal this is, but according to earlier reports, it is a deal that benefits the Chargers. Acee said in an earlier report that  there is not a lot of financial downside to L.A. for the Chargers. They would assume no risk via construction costs, minimal debt, and still realize significant revenue gains over what is available in San Diego. Stan Kroenke and the Rams are taking all the risk in the deal.

It’s still in the very beginning stages, but by the looks of it, the Chargers could be joining the Rams in Los Angeles. Nothing is guaranteed, however, Spanos most likely wouldnt have attempted a deal with Kroenke if the plan wasn’t to join the Rams.
