Former Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams will have a new home with the Cleveland Browns in 2017.
The Cleveland Browns have hired former Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams to the same position.
Williams, who was among multiple Rams coaches told to seek other employment by the team after the 2016 season, will assume the Browns defensive coordinator vacancy for 2017.
CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora has the latest:
"The Browns have secured Gregg Williams to be their next defensive coordinator. Done deal. Wholesale changes coming to defensive staff."
The move comes after the Browns fired defensive coordinator Ray Horton, which was reported on Saturday evening by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.
Williams is coming off a season in Los Angeles in which he did a solid job as the team’s coordinator. Los Angeles finished with per game rankings of ninth in total yards allowed, 10th in passing yards, and 16th in rushing yards.
Granted, L.A.’s defense did have some bad showings and allowed almost 25 points per game, but it’s not like the team’s offense was able to sustain drives to give the defense some support.
Williams has a tall task in front of him in Cleveland. The Browns were arguably the worst defense in the NFL in 2016, which led to the team making big changes to the coaching staff on that side of the ball.
The move to bring Williams in is a good one. He’s a proven success in the NFL over the course of his career and he can get the most out of whatever the Browns put on the field next season.
