With Jared Goff entering the 2017 season as the starter, the Los Angeles Rams should strongly consider moving on from Case Keenum and test free agency for a backup quarterback.

At the start of training camp last summer, former head coach Jeff Fisher believed Case Keenum was the answer at quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams over Jared Goff due to his veteran experience. Clearly, that was far from the case after Keenum was eventually benched for Goff following an embarrassing Week 10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in which he only completed 5 of 9 passes for 32 yards.

Keenum certainly showed potential at times in 2016, but there’s a reason why the veteran has struggled to land a consistent job in the NFL throughout his five-year career, even if the Rams failed to provide him with the necessary weapons on offense to succeed. The fact that Keenum failed to throw a single touchdown pass in five of his nine starts from last year shows how ineffective he truly was at quarterback. And with Keenum set to become a free agent this offseason, here’s to hoping Los Angeles makes the right decision to let him end up elsewhere for the 2017 season.

The good news for the Rams is if they did in fact let Keenum hit the open market, the team would still be in good hands with Sean Mannion as a backup to Goff. The third-year quarterback may not have that much experience during the regular season, but keep in mind how well Mannion looked at times for Los Angeles during preseason last August.

When choosing between the two for the backup job to Goff, there’s no question Mannion seems like the much better option over Keenum heading into next year. Not to mention if the Rams do still want to consider other options at backup quarterback, there free agency market will have a few key players as well who are much better than Keenum.

Either way, the only thing that matters for Los Angeles at this point is realizing there’s no need to provide Keenum with another chance, and bring him back on board for another year. As displayed over the years, having a reliable backup quarterback has become extremely important in the NFL, and if Goff were to suffer some unfortunate injury during the 2017 season, would Sean McVay really want to settle for Keenum as his next best option?
