For the second season in a row, the Los Angeles Rams placed the franchise tag on cornerback Trumaine Johnson

Ever since the regular season came to an end, Trumaine Johnson seemed to be a likely candidate to receive the franchise tag from the Los Angeles Rams for the second year in a row. With the deadline to tag players scheduled for Wednesday, it looks like the Rams have made the move with Johnson official for the 2017 season.

Los Angeles has officially placed the franchise tag on Johnson for the second-straight season, scheduling him to be the league’s highest-paid cornerback. Johnson may not have displayed the best year in 2016, but it appears the Rams would rather spend a ton of money for their beloved cornerback for the 2017 season instead of risking a long-term deal.

Unfortunately for Los Angeles, the organization was in a difficult position when it comes to figuring out what to do with Johnson. The team felt confident losing Janoris Jenkins to the New York Giants last offseason, and moving forward with Johnson after the cornerback recorded seven interceptions during the 2015 season, but the debate is still out there when it comes to whether he’s capable of handling the duties of the top cornerback for the team.

Johnson’s production was down last year after only recording one interception in 14 games, but hopefully the decision by Los Angeles to use the franchise tag for the second year in a row will motivate him to perform better in 2017. Otherwise, Johnson could be looking for a new home after next season if the Rams are hesitant about giving him a long-term deal, just like they were this time around.
