Before deciding to call it a career and retire, former Denver Broncos defensive star DeMarcus Ware apparently met with the Los Angeles Rams over the weekend.

With the addition of Wade Phillips, the Los Angeles Rams hope their beloved defense can return to the dominant level, and be considered one of the best in the league with Aaron Donald leading the way. The Rams certainly made a key addition on Monday with the signing of Kayvon Webster at cornerback, but it appears they were trying to land another former member of the Denver Broncos in DeMarcus Ware.

ESPN’s Field Yates reported on Monday how Ware met with the team over the weekend, which coincidentally happened to be the same day the defensive superstar announced his retirement from the NFL. Without question, Ware’s leadership would have been an amazing addition to Los Angeles’ defense, but the news of his retirement shouldn’t come as a surprise after 12 seasons.

While Yates was the first one to report the visit between Ware and the organization, Gary Klein of The Los Angeles Times pointed out how the linebacker was originally there on “other business” before the meeting that took place with Philips and Sean McVay. Even if the possibility of Ware joining the Rams for the 2017 season seemed like a long shot, it’s still a tough pill to swallow when looking at what he would have been able to bring to the table on the defensive side of the football.

The fact that Ware recorded 138.5 sacks over 12 seasons as members of the Broncos and Dallas Cowboys will make a strong case down the road when the time comes for him to be eligible for earning a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Of course, with Ware officially out of the picture due to retirement, it will be interesting to see how Los Angeles addresses the linebacker position over the next few weeks in free agency.
