Sean McVay will be tested with Rams QB narrative

As the Los Angeles Rams head to camp, head coach Sean McVay may find his would be starter at quarterback a hard sell to a skeptical fan base and media.

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has a few more days of sanity left.

But just a few.

Later this week, as the Southern California and NFL media begin to head to Irvine to chronicle all the happenings at training camp, the first year head coach will find himself selling his 2017 edition of the Rams. Like a lot of things, some parts will be an easier sell than other.

Expect a hard sell when starting quarterback Jared Goff is involved.

Short of injury, Goff will be atop the depth chart come Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts. Every week leading up to that, and especially after every preseason game where expectations will be high, McVay will “always be closing” when making a pitch for his very young quarterback and equally young team.

Such will be life for the Rams this season.

While not quite the used car sales lot in Anytown, USA, McVay will have his work cut out for him. In the afterglow of a draft where offensive weapons were the top priority, utilization of those players will be scrutinized only slightly less than every throw, caught or otherwise, Goff makes and does not.

Already, former Rams running back and Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson is on the record as saying the starter should be third year QB Sean Mannion. For those with a short memory, E.D. sparred openly with former coach Jeff Fisher. An ugly episode as the team was establishing a beachhead in Los Angeles.

Dickerson isn’t, and won’t be the only voice to offer an opinion should the quality of play at the most critical position on the field flounder.

That’ll be a tough row to hoe for McVay as he begins a career in a bright media spotlight. To his credit, it likely won’t be any more harsh than the swarm his boss in Washington faced each week with an established quarterback AND team.
