After having wrist surgery in the offseason, Tavon Austin was a full participant for the Los Angeles Rams during the first day of training camp.

Around this time last year was one of the best moments of Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Tavon Austin‘s career after the organization rewarded him with a hefty four-year, $42 million extension in August, although the debate is still out there on whether he’s worthy of all that money. Unfortunately, the Rams may have jumped the gun with locking Austin up to a new deal after they had high expectations for the wideout following a 2015 campaign in which he found the end zone a total of 10 times, but hopefully a new offensive system can bring the best out of the wideout.

Expectations are high for Los Angeles on offense heading into the 2017 NFL season following the hiring of Sean McVay as the youngest head coach in history after seeing how much success he’s had over the last few years as offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins. While McVay doesn’t have the effective receivers to work with like he did with the Redskins, many believe if anyone is going to get the best out of Austin, it’s him.

One of the main reasons why Los Angeles was willing to use a first-round pick on Austin back in 2013 was due to his ability to be a threat at multiple positions, but the fact that he set a career high last season with 509 receiving yards shows how much of a disappointment he’s been. To top it off, there was even more concern surrounding Austin this offseason with his wrist surgery since there was a chance he was going to miss the start of training camp, but luckily that wasn’t the case after participating in Saturday’s activities.

Of course, just because Austin took part in the first day of camp doesn’t mean he’s at the level the Rams need him to be since he’s already at a disadvantage when it comes to learning McVay’s new offense since he hasn’t been able to participate in workouts over the last few months. But for the sake of Los Angeles, the important factor is Austin was on the field for the first day of camp, and hopefully he picks up the offense quicker than expected to provide better hope of finally earning that ridiculous contract.
