Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay took home Coach of the Year honors from the Pro Football Writers of America.

Despite their early exit from the playoffs during the Wild Card Round against the Atlanta Falcons, the Los Angeles Rams have plenty to be proud of this season when looking at where this team stood around this time last year. After making the long overdue decision to part ways with Jeff Fisher towards the end of the 2016 season, the Rams took a huge risk by making Sean McVay the youngest head coach in NFL history last January, but it only took one year to prove this was the best decision the team ever made.

From Los Angeles emerging as the team to beat in the NFC West over the Seattle Seahawks to making NFL history by going from worst to first in scoring (14 points per game in 2016 to 29.9 points per game this season), McVay has given Rams fans plenty of reasons to be excited about what’s in store over the next couple of seasons. Think about it, if Los Angeles was able to find this much success during the first season under McVay when it was supposed to be a year of rebuilding, just imagine what could be in store for 2018.

Without question, McVay’s success with the Rams this season has helped the former offensive coordinator of the Washington Redskins has put him in the conversation for taking home Coach of the Year honors when the time comes. But at least for the mean time, McVay and Los Angeles has every reason in the world to be thrilled over earning the honors from the Pro Football Writers of America.

Over the last month or two, there’s been a fun debate about whether McVay would beat Doug Pederson of the Philadelphia Eagles out for Coach of the Year since his team is one win away from representing the conference in Minnesota for Super Bowl 52. With that being said, one of the main  reasons why McVay was at least able to beat out the Eagles coach from the perspective of PFWA is due to the mess he inherited in the offseason.

Los Angeles was the laughing stock of the NFL a year ago after only winning four games, especially when seeing how horrendous the offense was due to a weak offensive line along with an awful receiving corps. Thanks to McVay, the Rams’ offense pulled off a complete turnaround, and even helped Todd Gurley emerge as a serious MVP contender after the running back finished the regular season with 2,093 yards from the line of scrimmage to go along with 19 total touchdowns, making it clear he was worthy of these honors from PWFW.
