Round 3, Pick 95: Deionte Thompson, S, Alabama

Two years ago, the Rams decided to use a third-round pick on John Johnson following an impressive career at Boston College, and to say the selection ended up working wonders on defense would be a huge understatement for Los Angeles.

Even more exciting, Johnson is only scratching the surface of what looks like is going to be a promising career in the NFL, and one can only imagine how much he’s going to benefit from the addition of veteran Eric Weddle, who signed with the team in free agency.

While Weddle certainly helps fill the void at safety left by Lamarcus Joyner since Los Angeles felt it would be too expensive to keep the former safety around before he joined the Oakland Raiders, the defense could still use depth at the position.

As great as it will be to have Weddle moving forward, the Rams also know that he’s not getting any younger, and a potential successor such as Deionte Thompson could be another great addition to the defensive side of the football.

Alabama has produced plenty of great defenders over the years thanks to Nick Saban, and even if Thompson didn’t start right away for the Rams, that opportunity could always come later.
