LA Rams 7-Round mock draft 2.1 heading into NFL Combine
By Larry Brake
LA Rams move into the first round via trade
The Rams strike a deal with the Las Vegas Raiders. In this scenario, the LA Rams send cornerback Jalen Ramsey and their compensatory round four selection to move into the twelfth overall selection of the draft. If you recall, Ramsey said last season that Las Vegas would be a place for him to play.
You may think that trading Ramsey away makes zero sense because of the two first-round picks the Rams gave up for him. But with the Rams’ current salary cap situation, and even less room to pay for free agents next season, there is no way of knowing whether Ramsey would re-sign in LA. In fact, could the Rams afford to pay him what he wants to be paid?
The Rams strategy may be better off reducing salary and rebuilding through the 2020 NFL draft. Right now, the LA Rams already boast a solid group of young talented players in their secondary. Imagine the quality of the player taken at pick at 12 as opposed to picking at 52? So, with their first pick in the first round, the Rams select quarterback Justin Herbert of Oregon.
The Oregon quarterback stands 6-feet-6 weighing 227 pounds. Herbert threw for 10,541 yards with 95 touchdowns. Best of all, he fits the Rams style of offense. He offers a stand-in-the-pocket cannon of an arm, but can also force defenses to play him running out of the pocket for a first down. Mobile quarterbacks were the Achilles heel of the San Francisco 49ers defense. Watch him perform each drill at the NFL Combine.
Quarterbacks will take the field for their drills on Thursday, February 27. QB Herbert will begin to raise his draft stock and prove his passing arm is as strong as hoped for when that happens. The Rams get their future franchise quarterback via trade.
This next player will be vital in protecting Herbert for seasons to come.
