Why the LA Rams should pry OLB Von Miller away from Denver Broncos
By Bret Stuter
What is the LA Rams’ incentive?
Well, this one seems a bit easier to rationalize. The LA Rams have all types of connections to OLB Von Miller. He was coached by former defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. And more recently, he was coached by current defensive coordinator Brandon Staley.

Von Miller could be the keystone defender to unlock the full potential of DT Aaron Donald. In just nine seasons in the NFL, he has sacked the quarterback 106 times. OLB Dante Fowler Jr. has recorded 27.5 sacks in just four NFL seasons. But Fowler Jr. is entering just his fifth NFL season, and Miller is entering his tenth.
Miller brings immediate respect to the Rams defense should he arrive for the 2020 season. And when he arrives, he brings the fact that he has played, and flourished, in the defensive philosophy of Brandon Staley, which the Rams are about to employ. That alone is worth the effort for the Rams to make the call and work out a deal.
But let’s not forget the shiny new SoFi Sports Complex, waiting for a huge season from the LA Rams. The LA Rams have a golden opportunity to create such a buzz in the NFL this season that it will last for the next decade. To do so, the Rams will need to do more than line up undrafted free agents in 2020. Adding OLB Von Miller will splash headlines for a week. How would this trade work? On the LA Rams part, the team would apply the franchise tag to Fowler. For the Broncos, it would simply be executing the team option
This is a close to a win-win for the Broncos as it gets folks. The team gets a cheaper and younger version of Von Miller in Dante Fowler Jr. to build their future defense around. It also removes what is now a frustrated veteran Von Miller from the rebuilding process.
For the Rams, they get Von Miller to pair with Aaron Donald at nearly Dante Fowler’s contract price. And for both the LA Rams and the Denver Broncos, it places them closer to where they want to be in 2020 than before.
