LA Rams pre-2020 NFL Draft meetings summary by position
By Bret Stuter
LA Rams hold 7 picks in 2020 NFL Draft. Which positions will they fill? Let’s revisit their pre-draft meetings by position for the answer
The LA Rams, like all NFL teams, were instructed to cease direct meetings with 2020 NFL Draft prospects as a precautionary measure to thwart the spread of the contagious COVID-19. At the time, we had drawn up a rather detailed article analyzing who the Rams had held meetings with at or around the time of the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine.
The results of who the Rams had me with at that time included:
Two linebackers (Akeem Davis-Gaither and Jordyn Brooks)
Two edge rushers (Kendall Coleman) and Alabama’s edge rusher Terrell Lewis
Three running backs (Darrynton Evans and Zack Moss) plus UCLA RB Joshua Kelley
One center (Cesar Ruiz)
One wide receiver (Van Jefferson)
Two tight ends (Noah Togiai) plus Oregon (TE Jake Breeland )
But the Rams continued to hold additional meetings with players. We didn’t discover the Rams meeting with CB Javaris Davis at the Combine plus Tulsa CB Reggie Robinson II
As well as a meeting with defensive lineman from Michigan State’s Raequan Williams
Since the original face-to-face meetings, the team has had virtual meetings with WR Denzel Mims
And Washington center Nick Harris
Plus Utah defensive tackle Leki Fotu
as well as Colorado linebacker Darion Taylor. In fact, we had just reported the Taylor meeting in a separate article. So far, the distribution of reported meetings of the Rams with potential rookies has been:
Nine defensive players (3 linebackers, 2 edge rushers, 2 defensive linemen, 2 cornerbacks)
Eight offensive players (2 running backs, 2 wide receivers, 2 centers, 2 tight ends)
I wouldn’t focus mightily upon the players themselves, but the positions are telling. We know the Rams have needs at linebacker and edge rusher, so that is not surprising. But the presence of defensive linemen and cornerbacks on defense is a curious pattern. Similarly, we now know that the Rams need a running back and a wide receiver, but the team has also targetted a bona fide center and tight end in this draft, while no mention of meeting with an offensive tackle to date.
The time awaiting the 2020 NFL Draft is drawing to a close for the LA Rams. Entering the draft with seven picks will mean the team will be able to address some needs. Which positions will the team focus upon in this draft? I suppose it all depends upon how the board lines up for the team.
