The LA Rams passed twice on rookie WR Denzel Mims  in the 2020 NFL Draft and were wise to do so

The LA Rams entered the 2020 NFL Draft without a first-round draft pick. The value of the Rams’ first-round pick had already been negotiated and was on the roster as the player by the name of their All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Wide receiver Denzel Mims was projected as a highly talented receiver for the same draft, a draft filled with some of the best and deepest wide receivers ever to come out in one draft class.  So it seemed with near certainty that the LA Rams would not have an opportunity to draft Mims, despite trading away a valuable veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks.

Of course, that did not stop us from creating scenarios where the Rams could land Mims. In fact, after learning of the LA Rams’ interest in Mims and the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine, we created two articles suggesting that wheeling-and-dealing LA Rams general manager Les Snead was prepared to trade up in this draft into round one,  and most likely to do so for rookie wide receiver Mims.

Rams show interest in speedy Mims

Why the interest? Mims was a fast guy and could catch a pass. That created all bits of potentially interesting offensive plays for the LA Rams.

light. Hot. The LA Rams had creative options available in the 2020 NFL Draft

It seemed like a long-shot, but certainly, something within the scope of something Rams’ Snead might do if he felt it could help the Rams. So the only question was whether Mims could help the Rams, and we explored that as well. After all, the Rams would certainly be shopping for a stretch-the-field type of wide receiver, a player whose speed and presence on the football field would command respect from the defense. That would force them into keeping both safeties back deep and allow more running lanes to develop for the teams running backs.
