Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions have serious question marks at both offensive guard positions. Questions so great that some project the team’s fortunes to rest solely upon the success of that offensive line’s ability to block. No pressure there, eh? Well, compound that by projecting your 2020 NFL Draft third-round pick, Jonah Jackson, as your starting offensive guard.

Rookie offensive linemen may earn playing time down the road. But the reality is that the entire 2020 NFL Draft class is at an extreme disadvantage. Like it or not, the lack of team activities this year, coupled with no preseason games to synch up to NFL game time speed, places many first-year players in a hole that will take many weeks to crawl out of.

Let’s make a deal!

The logical option would be to stack the roster with a veteran offensive lineman who can carry the snaps until the rookies can step up. For the Lions, the could be all of 2020. But if the Lions drafted to the position, why trade for a Rams veteran?

Simply stated, any rookie starting this season in the offensive line will be a deer in the headlights. The Lions could trade a conditional sixth-round pick to the Rams for IOL Brian Allen, or Coleman Shelton  The move will alleviate the bottleneck for the Rams at backup offensive lineman, and bolster the Lions at a critical position until their rookies can step up.
