The grind

Meanwhile, the rest of us are along for the ride. And like anyone who has spent any amount of time in the back seat on a long journey, it gets difficult to find patience without roadsigns. The NFL news is typically about the splash, and the good stuff, the grind, is left to sort out on our own. Well, thankfully, I’m out here with the rest, looking for bread crumbs about the Rams strategy.

The Rams should treat the NFL Draft as they have in the past. The team has filled any blatant roster holes via the NFL Free Agency market or by promoting from within. Then, the team attacks the draft as a way of garnishing the roster. Of course, the team keeps an eye on the future, and that means that the 2021 NFL Draft will carry some flair towards the 2022 free agents on the team.

Offensive linemen and linebackers?

The 2022 free agents for the Rams include five offensive linemen, four of which are interior linemen. The team is also projected to lose five linebackers, three on the interior of the defense, and another pair on the outside. The Rams project to lose two ERFA safeties, two defensive linemen, one of whom is starting nose tackle Sebastian Joseph Day, and two special team starters in KR/PR Nsimba Webster and PK Matt Gay.

So that seems to place linebackers and offensive linemen in the queue for the Rams in this draft. Of course, whether or not the Rams re-sign Darious Williams to a one-year contract, the team will need to address the shortage of cornerbacks on the roster this year. The Rams also have mentioned the need for more explosive weapons on the offense.  Of course, there is the need to add additional team ‘enhancements’ as well.  So what’s the plan? Let’s dive in and sort this out.
