How does this affect McGhee’s future?

Whenever the NFL disciplines a player, the first penalty is considered a warning shot. But the NFL never forgets. So now McGhee has a strike against him. A complete list of prohibited substances can be found on the NFLPA website. The penalties escalate quickly.

A first failed test for stimulants or diuretics will result in a two-game suspension.
A first failed test for anabolic steroids will result in a six-game suspension.
A second violation for stimulants of diuretics results in a five-game suspension. <-McGhee is here
A second violation for anabolics will result in a 17-game suspension.
A third violation could result in banishment for a minimum of two years.

While the NFL and NFLPA have modified the policy to focus more upon the player’s rehabilitation rather than punitive disciplinary actions, the burden of seeking help and correcting the problem continues to remain upon the player.

The LA Rams clearly believed in Tyrique McGhee’s talents. The team retained him while releasing numerous other defensive backs last year. Since that time, the Rams have invested hours of training, coaching, strength training, and a host of other resources to aid his way to become the best football player possible.

But now he is two strikes. With an NFL Draft on the horizon and a sea of rookie prospects eager to realize their dreams of turning pro in football, the LA Rams will be making decisions on remaining committed to McGhee or starting over with new faces. That’s always the risk of getting two strikes on you in the NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances. There is no guarantee that an NFL team will stick around for strike three.
