CB has gone from LA Rams strength to need

Rounding out the roster
In terms of safety support, the Rams have a solid depth even if the experience level of players is light. But the team has gotten starts out of Taylor Rapp, Jordan Fuller, and Terrell Burgess, and will get quality snaps out of backups J.R. Reed, Juju Hughes, and Nick Scott. Even Jake Gervase will factor into the mix.
But the Rams’ current complement of four cornerbacks is far too few to enter the 2021 NFL training camp, even if the majority will be virtual once more. A year ago the Rams carried eight cornerbacks on the 80 man roster. That became four cornerbacks on the 53 man roster and an additional two cornerbacks Donte Deayon and Tyrique McGhee on the practice squad.
That places this current roster four shy of the expected eight par level for the 90-man roster. But keep in mind that the 2020 roster was artificially set at 80 to help alleviate the team’s daily requirement to test incoming players. If the Rams do start at 90, the Rams could be adding more new faces than are currently on the team’s roster today.
The good news is that the 2021 draft class is truly loaded at cornerback. Even after the draft ends, the Rams should have plenty of roster spots to fill by signing undrafted free agents. While it may be difficult for those players to make an immediate impact in 2021, they should be ready for a larger role in 2022 when the Rams will need to fill a starting role.
The Rams will need to duplicate their success at the safety position in 2020 with a similar outcome for their cornerback position in 2021. This is a good draft class to find diamonds late, perhaps even after the draft is over. While there is still time and opportunity, the Rams will need to hit on the position at least one time, if not twice. Yep. Just a typical LA Rams draft in the end.
