He does it all

One of the most obvious reasons for Woods’ presence working for the Rams regardless of the offensive play called is simply the fact that he can do anything and everything asked of him at the wide receiver position and do it well. After all, the LA Rams are like almost every other NFL team. It’s a meritocracy. In short, the players who get the most opportunities do the most with those opportunities.

When most think of a receiver ‘doing it all’, they simply focus on route trees, single and double moves, and creating separation.  And that is indeed part of it. But this is the LA Rams, folks. If you don’t block, you don’t get the rock. Robert Woods is one of the best-blocking receivers in the NFL. And if you do the math, you may come to realize that a receiver is a blocker about four-fifths of the time that he is on the football field.

That gets lost on fans. They see a receiver, and it automatically triggers the catching and yardage elements of the position. But receivers block too. And some even rush with the ball. Did you know that Robert Woods rushed 24 times in 2020 for 155 yards and two touchdowns? That’s pretty good production from the occasional jet sweep.

Having a receiver who can block, who can rush, and who can put up over a thousand yards in one season may not be the sexiest qualities for fantasy football owners. But for the LA Rams organization, it’s exactly what the team wants and needs at their receiver role. And it’s that swiss army knife utility that keeps him on the field. That will make him Matthew Stafford’s favorite target. And that will lead him to the top receiver for the Rams in 2021.
