LA Rams 2022 NFL Scouting Combine Primer
The LA Rams are stuck with working the complex problem of restocking the roster on at least three critical fronts. Their first and perhaps foremost challenge to be mastered is to free up sufficient salary-cap space to allow the team the leeway to make the necessary roster moves to restock the roster for another Super Bowl run.
Unfortunately, the Rams are over $13 million above their 2022 NFL salary cap limit, and they must clear enough space to fall under that cap by the start of the 2022 NFL year, which occurs on March 16, 2022, at 1:00 pm PT. While the Rams have shown that the organization has plenty of ability to create significant salary cap savings, the team has just two weeks’ time to not only pare $13 million but to go significantly beyond that number to allow the team enough free cash to extend a number of key players.
NFL Free Agency
The 2022 NFL Free Agency market will certainly be a significant test for the entire LA Rams organization. At the height of the post-Super Bowl LVI victory euphoria, players and coaches alike pledged to “Run It Back’. Now, the question is, who gets paid? Who must take a hometown discount? And worst of all, it is simply not affordable to extend some free agents, no matter what the price.
There is a lot of chatter about the Rams extending vital contributors to the roster. But if you have been following the LA Rams track record, they are not a very active team when the bidding starts for free agents. The Rams, if I may say so, are a bit tight-fisted when it comes to paying what the market will bear. Rather, the team over the past several years has focused on one or two key contributors to re-sign. The team will also sign as many inexpensive ERFA and RFA players as possible. Beyond that? Well, odds are not great that the team will extend many players.
