When the Los Angeles Rams pulled off a stunning trade for star edge rusher Myles Garrett, many in the NFL world immediately pondered the possibility of Aaron Donald unretiring to create the most frightening defensive-line duo of all time.

Some of that speculation comes from a previous Donald comment. He said last offseason that he would consider returning if the Rams acquired Micah Parsons. Now, a year later, everyone wants to know what he’s thinking with Garrett joining Donald's former team.

Donald recently shared his thoughts about a possible comeback. During a Tuesday episode of The Pat McAfee Show, McAfee revealed that he messaged Donald on Tuesday morning to discuss his potential return. The legendary defensive tackle admitted, “It for sure got me thinking.”

McAfee asked Donald if he could relay that message on air. Donald responded, “35 [years old], removed two years ago, gotta see if that fire can light back up.”

Aaron Donald admits Myles Garrett trade has him thinking about a comeback

McAfee encouraged Donald to light the fire and get the knives back out, referencing some of his famous training methods, and all the Rams legend did was laugh. However, it’s clear that he’s thinking about it, and that’s enough to get Los Angeles fans excited. It's enough to make everyone else in the NFL lose sleep.

Donald retired after the 2023 season, and he was still playing at an elite level then. The defender had made his 10th straight Pro Bowl, one for each year of his career, and while he certainly appeared capable of keeping things rolling, he was comfortable calling it a career.

Recently, during an appearance on the Not Just Football podcast, Donald explained that he’s often asked if he’s really done. His response is that he has no urge to play football anymore. He admitted that he even asks himself if he wants to get back out there, and the answer is always no.

That’s likely what he’s referring to when he says he has to see if the fire within him can light back up. Just like football fans everywhere, he can’t help but wonder what the Rams' defense would look like with him lined up next to Garrett.

But Donald has never been one to cheat the game. He knows that if he’s going to come back, he has to be all-in - for real. Great as he is, he can’t just show up on Sundays and rush the passer; he has to do all the hard things year-round that make gamedays look so effortless.

Donald is the only person who knows if he truly wants to commit to that grind again. While it would be fun to watch him and Garrett wreak havoc, Donald should absolutely remain retired if his heart isn’t in a return.
