The Los Angeles Rams just reached an agreement with Matthew Stafford for his return in 2026. While it's essentially a one-year deal, it's enough for now. The reigning NFL MVP will be back in the pocket for the Horns, and just like that, the optimism meter for 2026 just hit maximum. But it's a fleeting bout of promise. After 2026, fans have to face it all over again.
But Adam Schefter sees a glimmer of hope in Stafford's latest deal:
"Matthew Stafford is the reigning MVP and he deserved to be rewarded..

I think with a deal like this it shows that he's probably planning on playing a couple more years"@AdamSchefter #PMSLive pic.twitter.com/mS0UJCl6UN
Matthew Stafford's contract, in Schefter's opinion, leaves the door wide open for him to return in 2027 as well. And that means that rookie quarterback Ty Simpson's on-ramp to assume the reins of this offense may not happen until 2028. While that may disappoint some fans, it's all part of a strategy to optimize this roster.
As the defending NFL MVP, Stafford has no competition for the starting role. And it's almost inconceivable that he will be pushed in training camp by anyone as long as he wants to play. But at the same time, the risks of injury to Stafford increase with each season.
So, if only as insurance, the front office was painted into a corner to ensure adequate depth at the position.
Adam Schefter decrypts Rams brilliant draft strategy
The LA Rams do not expect to be adding any rookies within the top 15 selections of the draft for the foreseeable future. So, choosing a quarterback in this year's draft was almost mandated. But Ty Simpson was viewed by many to be the second-best rookie quarterback in this draft.
His only detriment was a lack of starting experience. Los Angeles, a team with a coaching staff constructed to coach up quarterbacks, is the optimal landing spot for a high-ceiling prospect.
Simpson needs experience. And Adam Schefter just decrypted why the Rams addition of Ty Simpson is so brilliant. With Stafford earmarked to start through 2027, LA can coach up Ty Simpson over the next two seasons. But won't Simpson get stale sitting on the bench? Not really.
Backup quarterback Stetson Bennett is his first mile marker. Not only will Bennett get the primary backup team snaps, but it appears that Bennett will run the scouting team offense to prepare the defense for game day. For now, that is what Simpson will be gunning for.
Beyond that, Simpson will have plenty to work out with joint scrimmages throughout training camp and preseason games. He doesn't have to astonish in 2026. But by the end of the 2027 NFL season, he will be ready to take over. And after getting two years of NFL coaching and practices, he should be ready to handle the spotlight.
Keep in mind that any NFL team can swing and miss when drafting a quarterback. The San Francisco 49ers invested multiple first-round picks into rookie quarterback Trey Lance. The Carolina Panthers have struggled to optimize first overall pick Bryce Young.
SImpson is different because Los Angeles understands that he could struggle to develop instantly in 2026.
For LA, it was now or never. Drafting a rookie quarterback in 2026 only made sense if he:
A - Has tremendous upside
B - Has experience in patiently waiting for his chance to start
C- Is coachable. Has the ability to learn the Rams' complex offense
And Ty Simpson checks all the boxes.
Let's not rush to a verdict. Yes, Los Angeles could have whiffed. But what if Ty Simpson proves to be a grand successor to Matthew Stafford? Everyone knows that nobody will admit to being wrong.
As always, thanks for reading.
