CJ Daniels wasted no time proving he's worth every penny of Rams' investment

It was somewhat surprising when the Los Angeles Rams traded up to draft Miami receiver CJ Daniels in the sixth round. Although Daniels is a clear fit for the offense, surrendering three late-draft dart throws for one seems to run against the grain of conventional wisdom. Daniels, though, is a special kind of player.

It was an unusual Day 3 maneuver for Rams general manager Les Snead. But in a draft class that was a bit ho-hum in terms of intriguing prospects, Daniels was LA's last shot at landing a receiver who checked all the boxes.

Even conceding picks that turned into cornerback Domani Jackson, defensive tackle Uar Bernard, and edge rusher Keyshawn James-Newby, Daniels appears to be the right choice.

After just two days of training camp, the Miami product already looks like the Rams' latest Day 3 draft gem. After catching everything thrown his way in college, Daniels has done the same in Rams practice.

While Daniels is certainly making the most of his initial opportunities, he has a long way to go. Head coach Sean McVay loves to see standouts in the early days of training camp. But now that Daniels has raised the bar, others may soon follow suit.

It's on Daniels to sustain his high level of performance. And that is where the rubber hits the road. Rookies can spike early, if only from the adrenaline rush of competing in the pros. But as days drag on, it's those who make steady progress and perfect their craft who move up the depth chart.

Other Rams receivers are fighting to break through that plateau. And some have the potential to turn minor fixes into major improvements. For his part, Daniels is maximizing every opportunity. If he can keep it up, he will be a factor in the Rams offense.
