As the new league year officially starts on Wednesday, the LA Rams have made it official.
They finally made a decision on veteran wide receiver Cooper Kupp. Los Angeles has informed Kupp of his release, which allows him to now find a new home as soon as he would like.
After we had known of this coming for a while, especially after the Davante Adams signing, Kupp's time in LA is now over.
With the wide receiver market not exactly booming with top-tier options in free agency, Kupp will definitely have his suitors. However, not all of them will make a ton of sense.
He could go a variety of routes, but what we know about Kupp could end up leading him to an obvious organization, next.
The Chargers are a perfect destination for Cooper Kupp in free agency
Look at the positives, here. Kupp is a family man. If he signed with the Chargers, he'd hardly have to move. Both teams share the same stadium, for goodness sake.
The mere fact that he wouldn't have to go anywhere has to be appealing to the former All Pro.
But, going to a team with a quarterback like Justin Herbert is also an appealing factor, here. Herbert has long been viewed as an upper echelon type of quarterback, but injuries to his wide reciever core over the years have hurt him drastically.
Not to mention, a couple of key injuries to Herbert, himself, haven't helped.
Just last year, the Chargers saw longtime fan favorite Keenan Allen leave by way of trade. Then, they went out and drafted Ladd McConkey as his replacement. Still, the Chargers did not have a whole lot left to work with in their receiver room.
Would Kupp make sense for a team like the Chargers? You bet he would. The only thing he'd have to sell a prospective team on is his health, which has been in question for a while now. Of course, that's a big reason why the Rams had to ultimately move on. Injuries have been a problem.
One more factor: Jim Harbaugh. He's a well-respected head coach who favors quarterbacks. Last year, he immediately went into building a better offensive line for Herbert while adding McConkey.
This year, Harbaugh might be a factor in whether or not the Chargers land Kupp. Harbaugh is a high character guy and so is Kupp. The two of them would seemingly mesh well.
Is this a match made in heaven?
